Access to the gorge is via the Kurland quarry, and driving across the rutted terrain it is hard to imagine how rugged and steep a drop you’re about to encounter.
In the background of the picture above you see the ridge of the Tsitsikamma’s, and hidden behind the tree is Peak Formosa, an 1800m high magnificent mountain top which we’d last scrambled up in September.
Even from the - comparatively easy - Northern side the route up Peak Formosa is quite strenuous - it took us 4 hours up and another 4 down, plus 6 hours driving there and back. But it’s worth the struggle - what a view! You can see the Ocean in the picture below, in the far right. That’s where we climbed!
